It is also very annoying that the slightest change of hardware (such as getting new memory) means you can't restore the backup. So you send in your phone for warranty repairs, want to restore the backup and you can't. Unbelievable. Any other phone can do it, including the main competitors iPhone (very easy) and Android (in parts easy, other parts not so much, but it is absolutely possible).

@Bryan great story!
Now that the #SmartPhoneBetaTest is apparently over, those of us that have been unknowingly involved are reporting on our findings. We are reporting on missing core functionality in an effort to make SmartPhones - specifically WindowsPhone devices - better.
The votes don't lie.

After the release of WP7 I prompted a number of my business associates, friends and family towards Windows Phone 7. I think it is a great system. However it has a number of shortcomings.
A complete Phone backup which includes Phone call histories and threads, Contacts, Music, Photos and Text Messages is very important!!. When I purchased my WP7 phone about 18 months ago, I had to reset my phone about 1 week after I purchased it and - lucky for me - I only had a weeks worth of text messages that I lost. I now have a business associate who bought a WP7 device and yesterday his phone had a major malfunction. HTC told him that his data on the phone would be lost and that they could not recover the Text messages. He was devastated as the text messages were absolutely important to his business. He never had a method for backing them up and often asked me about this facility. I kept telling him that it would not be too long before a WP& Phone backup was available because so many people ask about this. I feel very bad for him and his business as I am the one that recommended the WP7 phone.
Microsoft, if you are serious about staying in the Smartphone game, I hope you implement this along with numerous other changes that have been contributed by WP7 users on this forum (and many other forums around the world) since its release.
If Apollo is released and most of the important and requested improvements have not been implemented, sadly I will have to move on to another Smartphone. Hey I love the WP7 interface but there needs to be some major changes implemented to stay in touch with Android or IOS. Please don't lets us down!!

This would also be a useful component of enterprise mobile device management, as mentioned in this suggestion:

Just spent the last month getting my new Nokia Lumina 900 setup after using a Samsung Focus from dy one. I did put up with the pain because I didn't want it exactly like the way I had setup the Focus but then a couple days ago the Lumina took a plung into the toilet. It survived without damage so far but wish it were backed up now instead of at the last update. Restore points are just a wish and a prayer away. Is Microsoft listening?

It is a shame that only with Zune - that is media oriented - the phone is allowed to comunicate with pcs. What about something like PC Suite, or better yet My Phone Explorer using Bluetooth? Even managing a few dozen contacts with Windows Live is a nightmare.

It's not a #FreeTimeMachine if you have to start all over on a new device or if something happens to your current device.

This also affects game app progress, especially games that use Live achievements.
See this developer request for the ability to restore game app data based on Live achievements or stored data:

This is an ESSENTIAL FEATURE!!! We will pay for this functionality, even though there are freebies in the Android/iToy spheres. As great as the phone is, a basic, even core feature is missing. Please address this as soon as practical or even get one of the developers to spend some time on it. There are plenty of games, but why the lack of utilities?

I think a user backup procedure needs to be implemented as soon as possible. And this includes the ability to migrate the backup to another phone. I represent a Microsoft Partner, and we are seeing increased sales from teaming Microsoft's Office 365 (cloud solution) with Windows Phone. The integration is just seamless. Some of our customers are using 2 year old first gen devices, which are now end of life, and many are considering upgrades, especially to the new Nokias. However a big stumbling block for us, from an "ecosystem" point of view is the inability to move SMS from old to new phone. For many businesses these SMS messages are as important as email, and right now they will lose these messages. If MS want Windows Phone to penetrate the business market, they must give us the right tools to enable migration...
