  Why this doesn't have more votes I don't understand - this would alleviate a dead tile for better use by a live tile, and makes sense/is completely intuitive.

  Excellent idea. Would love to see the settings icon appear below the arrow icon on the right of the Start screen. It totally deserves to be there! We don't need a tile or an app for settings, it needs to be in that specific area only.

  Pehaps you could even put the same notifications about unread emails/messages that appear on the lock screen into that empty space too. That would save having to have those tiles pinned to the Start Screen.
