Fix the turn by turn navigation so that it doesn't suck (i.e. google navigation or better)

I think my Wife's Android with Google navigation is SOOOO much better than the Bing map navigation. Bing can start by offering "Rotates with my current direction" at all times rather than just when the driving directions are being displayed.

3-D perspective AND current direction would be a big plus.

Navigation in Mapa has to tell the driver 0.2 miles before any turn/curve/exit. Just take advice from Garmin

Turn by turn directions announced as the turns approach would be appreciated while driving. Also, add options to avoid tolls or highways.

I do miss navigation from my Windows Mobile 6.5 phone. How about when using "directions" if a user selects the walk icon then have it use tapping for directions, the direction list, etc. But when user selects the car icon make it fully automated like a navigation device would be expected to work (hands free). A really nice feature would be to determine if a car is being used (speed of travel) and auto switch to voice navigation and a full screen map if it wasn't already selected.

My phone is bluetooth paired to my car so one issue I've noticed is that there's a delay between when the phone "talks" and when the car turns on the speakers causing some of the audio to be missed. If the phone could start to communicate with the car 1 second prior to voice instructions that could eliminate the lost audio.

I do like the nav on this. Compared to what we had in NoDo, this is an improvement. People need to remember that Google nav didn't get there overnight either; however, that said, I liked having the touch status that this current map has. If you notice, each time you touch it tells you how close you are to the next point or turn. This was good for me because, at the time I was listening to a podcast on my WP7 and didn't get intrusive voice notifications when I didn't want or need one. Having the option to have automatic reminders though would be very helpful. I like the direction menu at the bottom, because I could look to see what my next point was. It's not easy to read streets on the map as easily as it is in the turnbyturn directions. I would like the option to tag a direction point as 'avoid' and have the map recalibrate me around that point. That feature would have been very helpful as I was warned by CalTrans of some road work ahead that I avoided.

I really don't like the navigation. I agree that has to be more like google navigation on Android, Having to touch the screen to get voice instructions is really dumb. And the Driver perspective view is also a must, I like to see the streets names in 3d coming to me and getting larger as I get closer to the street.

I like the fact that you can touch the phone and get a voice reminder of the next turn so that shouldn't go away but...
There needs to be a ding or a voice that tells you that your turn is coming up. A voice reminder could/should tell you that your turn is coming in x feet. It is so frustrating to be somewhere you've never been and miss your turn because you didn't get notified that it was coming up.

Also, it should be easy to switch between viewing the full screen map or the directions list as needed, traffic info should be available, and re-routing should not require an additional tap. There's a lot of potential but it doesn't live up to what people need.

Agree on all points. The fact that it has voice available and yet it doesn't use it to announce upcoming turns without touching the screen completely blows my mind. Why even have voice at all?!? MS can't even match a Google Navigation service that is several years old. F-

I want this phone sooo bad. But, if the Nav is as bad as described by CNET's Molly Wood, I'll be an iPhone 5 because I paid big bucks for the TomTom app

Completely agree with everything said. At the moment turn-by-turn is not at all usable as a GPS system when driving. Having to tap to hear directions is completely silly, as well as the lack of auto-recalculation. Very disappointed by this much-awaited Mango feature. Android one was much much better.

Even Windows Mobile had better turn-by-turn in Bing Maps.
        I'd like to see:
        * Voice Guidance without the need to tap the screen
        * Voice Guidance while in full screen (i.e. without the list below)
        * Driver-perspective view like any other navigation software instead of the overhead view
        * Auto-recalculate if navigating off course
        * Traffic-based directions

thats all I can think of at the moment. But there's a LOT of room for growth and I hope it happens soon.

My GF bought an Android instead of a WP7 soley because of the navigation.

I 100% agree but with better manners. The think I really miss coming from Android is Google Maps and Navigation. Perhaps MSFT does not want to make one because it would hurt developers like Garmin in the market now. However, Google Maps with Nav is what got me into Android in the first place and that quality of an implementation on WP7 would be a big deal to potential buyers.

With Google Map and Nav you can
        1. Search for local business and see ratings
        2. Locate friends on the map with Latitude
        3. Navigate to any destination using true turn by turn navigation with just a tap and not having to open a third party app and reenter address or search criteria
        4. Real route recalculation when a turn is missed

In Bing maps now you have to tap on each direction to here it and that means you are taking your eyes off the road which is dangerous.

        Right now it:

        1. Dings about turns after you're past the turn.
        2. Volume is very low so you can't hear it in the car.
        3. The directions list is anoying and should go away.
        4. Doesn't show you the intersection with lane guidance or anything.

All of these things conspire to make the navigation functionality in Mango awful and not usable and the North American alternatives in the marketplace are all REALLY bad. (Navigon, where are you????)
