Syncing of Contacts via USB
It should be possible to synchronize your contacts you have on your pc to your phone via USB.

Microsoft's infatuation with the cloud, and believing that we will all live there is impractical. There are many reasons, but one of them is that there are limited data plans and not being abe to sync because Wi-Fi is not available is irritating.

Frankly, it's embarrassing to see less compatibility between 2 Microsoft products than there is between Microsoft and Apple, its direct competitor! (Because, unlike Windows Phone, iPhone supports the direct, offline synchronization of Outlook data *and* offers a cloud-based alternative for the same.)

Perhaps the original poster here meant they wanted to see USB sync supported WITHOUT Zune -- just map me a drive when I plug the phone in and let me copy my photos, music, whatever straight off/on the device without forcing everything to pass through Zune.

I have nothing against the cloud, nor against people using it. Personally, I was interested in the ability to create Outlook contacts or calender items, or edit a document on the phone, and then synchronize via USB cable the next time I came by my pc, whether on an aeroplane, in a train, in the mountain hut or elsewhere out of network reach, and to charge my phone at the same time. It appears that this is no longer offered by Microsoft, and the given solutions do not meat my wish and needs.
I therefore returned my newly purchased HTC Titan to the store and removed Zune from my pc. Straightaway I bought an iPhone for my wife and a Sony Ericsson Android-device for my son. I will continue using my old Windows Mobile device for a short period, and then - based on my my family's experiences - change to iOS, Blackberry or Android. -

Zune (or some other software module) should be able to sync any and all Outlook information (mail, tasks, calendar...) WITHOUT some additional sync with a Live account.

to me it is very strange there is no straight possibility for sync contacts while connected with PC outlook.

I don't get this request.
If i connect my phone (HTC HD7) to my PC via a USB cable, i can sync quite happily. Even if my wireless network is off.
