I agree with this, the speech system needed to be less of a commands list kind of speech engine and more like a voice assistant.

agreed. also would be nice if voice was more general and the phone found the appropriate app rather than having to go to the app and then go to voice within that app.

There's already the App Ask Ziggy that as text recognition works much better than native WP7.5 and does allot as Siri, what it misses is integration and support for other languages.

The Dave Chappelle voice would definitely be a popular feature. :) I would just add that the voice system needs to take third-party apps into account. This is something that siri doesn't do well now. If I could write an app that would somehow contribute voice commands to the OS (maybe kind of like how charms work in Windows 8?) then I would speech-enable all my apps. That would leap-frog what siri can do today.

Voice Recognition should be built into the OS from the bottom up. I should be able to do anything / everything on my phone with voice. I had more voice control on my Windows Mobile 6 phone than I do now with Windows Phone 7. We should be able to speak naturally, and have the phone speak to us naturally. I also want the phone speech to be customizeable so I can use Dave Chappelle for my GPS turn by turn directions, etc. Should be able to say, "How do I get home from here", it should open GPS, find my location, and give me turn by turn directions to home. I should be able to say, "Play some funk music". The phone should open media player, find something in the funk genre, and play it. I should be able to say, "Open my bank website". Phone should launch internet, open my bank site, and allow me to enter credentials using voice. TRUE integration from bottom to top.

This would be an amazing and practical feature to have.

I believe the TellMe team is already working on that

But I'm not sure how quickly they can deliver. MS has put tons money into research of natural language recognition and they have some amazing minds at MSR . But we have yet to see a solid consumer product from MS in this area. Again I'm sure they are working on it.

WP has the opportunity for deep integration for an assistant, unlike Siri which is a separate app.
