This is absolutely essential. And Apple has this perfect. There is no excusable reason why the user data should not be backed up and transferred back to the phone. This makes upgrading Windows Phones really difficult, especially for someone with important SMS Messages that need saved.

This is needed very badly especially as hot new WP devices are coming out and original adopters are able to upgrade.

This was one of my favorite features on old Windows Mobile and I was surprised it was missing.
