Microsoft, I'm excited that SMS backup is coming to WP8. However, extremely concerned that my loyalty to WP7 will not be rewarded with the ability to transfer my critical SMS & MMS history to my next phone (WP8) when it is released. If your fan base can come up base with a crude SMS backup method (SMSbackup), why can't you come up with a reasonable SMS & MMS transfer/backup method? Without it, you miss out on a crucial opportunity to encourage customer loyalty. Please please please provide this functionality for WP7 users by or prior to WP8's release!

For me, it is absolutely critical to be able to transfer my SMS & MMS messages on my current WP7 to my next phone (WP8). It would be very unfortunate if this feature were not implemented in WP7 *prior* to WP8's release, as it might cause people to wait on upgrading.

We are truly floored by the number of feature suggestions that we have received and the excitement about future Windows Phone releases. Some of you have been wondering, “Will Windows Phone 7.8 have the same features as in Windows Phone 8?” The answer, unfortunately, is no. Windows Phone 8 is a generation shift in technology, which means that it will not run on existing hardware. BUT we care deeply about our existing customers and want to keep their phones fresh, so we’re providing the new Start screen in the upcoming 7.8 update. We’ll have more to share on the Windows Phone 7.8 update in the coming weeks.

It is absolutely critical that we would be able to transfer our sms/mms data from our WP7.x phone to WP8! I can't believe that this option would not be available. Without it, users have one less reason to upgrade to WP8 as opposed to some other phone OS.
